Mumbai has officially inaugurated its first International Cruise Terminal at BPX-Indira Dock, marking a significant milestone in India's maritime infrastructure. The state-of-the-art facility is poised to enhance the nation's cruise tourism sector and establish Mumbai as a key player in the global cruise industry.

The Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal himself was present at the terminal for inauguration. This India's first and largest cruise terminal inauguration took place on April 21st at Mumbai. The terminal boasts a capacity to handle 200 ships and accommodate 1 million passengers annually.

Terminal is said to be India's largest ,as it covers the construction area of 4.15 lakh square feet. It is equipped with 22 elevators as the terminal has multiple floors and it has 10 escalators. Sources said this terminal has capacity to handle 10000 passenger everyday and is supposed to cater at least 1 Million passengers every year. Multi-storied parking is available for 300 cars. Notably, two cruise ships can berth simultaneously at the dock, facilitating efficient operations. There are more than 70 counters where the immigration process would be carried out.

The conceptualization of the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal was part of India's broader efforts to boost cruise tourism under the "Sagarmala" Program. The project was announced in March 2022, with an expected commissioning by July 2024. The total project cost was ₹495 crore, with ₹303 crore funded by the Mumbai Port Authority and the remaining by private operators. The terminal's development aims to bolster domestic and international cruising activities at Mumbai Port.
The establishment of the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal is a much awaited and important development in India's maritime history.
