The app had been removed from local app stores in February 2025 following concerns raised by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) over unauthorized transfers of user data and prompts. This transfer of information was being done to servers situated abroad, notably in China and the United States.

The PIPC halted DeepSeek's availability soon after its January launch, citing violations of South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act. Specifically, users were not adequately informed about data handling practices, nor were they given the option to consent to overseas data transfers. In response, DeepSeek made significant revisions to its privacy policy. The updated terms now include clearer disclosures and an opt-out feature for users who prefer not to have their data shared with third-party servers outside of South Korea. These changes led to the app’s reinstatement on major platforms like Apple's App Store and the Google Play Store.
